Using a plasma torch to cut large concentric washers, to be used as spacer shims. The work-piece is turned in a shop-built spindle fixture, chucked in a slowly turning drill press. The torch is located VIA common wrenches, clamped to the bench.
A two inch drilled hole process through 3/4″ steel. The AutoDrill 5100 series unit strokes down quickly, takes a nice controlled cut through the plate, then retracts back and ejects the “plug” created by the annular cutter. The annular cutter is simply a fancy hole saw for this type of process. We tried the “non-fancy” way of manually pecking to break the chip. As you can see, it didn’t work to well. AutoDrill *does* offer automatic peck cycles as well as PLC controllable drills with proximity sensors for a much better way of performing this process.
